First of all remember that the Pattaya Police are there to assist you when you have a problem.
Most tourists who visit this amazing city never have any dealings with the Thai Police. Some tourists however, and certainly some of the expats who live here, get involved with the Police in Pattaya at some point during their stay here.
If you are ever in a situation where you are involved with the Police in Thailand, it will certainly help matters if you keep calm and ensure your voice and manner are the same. Don’t get excited and start shouting or being abusive even in your own language as this will certainly only make the whole situation worse.
The Police in Pattaya do not like trouble makers or drunken thugs, and you can be sure that they will deal with any such people with a swift and decisive display of force. So for anyone who visits this city and has a reputation of being like this, the best advice to you is to try and keep your cool.
Remember that the Police in Thailand do not have the same rules and politically correct values as do the Police forces in many western countries.
Usually the Pattaya Police do not abuse their powers, and so long as you remain calm and respectful, you can expect to be dealt with in the same way. The Police in Pattaya are instructed to be polite and careful when dealing with foreigners, and as such usually act in such a way. If however you find that not to be the case you can always request to be dealt with by a special unit of Tourist Police in Pattaya. They speak very good English are there to help and assist with all matters related to tourists, regardless of nationality.
As for crime in Pattaya, well most visitors feel safer here than they do back in their home countries. Of course crime does occur occasionally; you will get pick-pockets in places like Walking Street, or snatch and grabs from youths on motorbikes. But these are few and far between, and usually when some tourist has been flashing the cash.
Should you ever be involved in an accident during your stay here in Pattaya, what ever happens ensure you do not flee the scene, as this will be regarded as the accident being your fault! The best thing to do is stay there until the Pattaya Police arrive, or better still try and reach an agreement with the other parties involved if at all possible.
Unlike most western countries, Thailand openly accepts that many situations can be easily and better resolved by way of a financial payment. If you are involved in an accident and it was your fault, it can be better to make an offer of a payment to the other people involved, especially the Thai’s. This will then conclude the matter without the need for any Police involvement.
If you are ever stopped by the Police for any traffic offence don't be surprised or annoyed if you are asked for money. Fines for minor traffic violations can often be paid for on the spot. Don't think too much about where the money goes.
Remember violent crime involving tourists is very rare in Pattaya, and most people who visit this city find it safer than their home countries. The majority of people who visit here have an amazing trouble free and enjoyable time.
